Chapter Sixteen

Oh, this is a clusterfuck.

Karia had mere seconds to come up with some type of solution to this problem, and her mind was drawing a blank. Introductions would be necessary but not easily explained. She was under no obligation to go into detail with Matthew or Trick. There was no obvious indication that Matthew was there to pick her up for a date. He was a colleague, and they were friends.

“You didn’t double book, did you?” Matthew chuckled.

Dammit. His attempt at humor only added to the awkwardness of the situation. When he leaned in and kissed Karia on the cheek, she could almost feel the angry heat radiating off Trick.

“Who are you?” Trick’s tone had a strong bite, leaving no question that he’d already put together exactly who Matthew was and why he was at her apartment.

“Matthew. We work together at the hospital.”

Oh, thank God. Don’t say anything else.

“Finally got her to go out with me. Took a while though.”

Fuck! This was bad. So very bad.

“Who are you?” It was a fair question considering Trick had asked Matthew the same. However, Trick didn’t take it nearly as lightly as her date.

She peeked over and Trick raised his brows.

Oh God. This was like a slow-motion movie. The plot was already predicted, which explained the heat and blush rising from her chest to her face. Seconds passed, and Karia’s heart began to pound. She had no idea how Trick would explain his connection to her. Up until five minutes ago, they were just a one-night stand in her eyes.

“I’m the guy who was in her bed two nights ago. All fucking night.”

Oh. My. God.

Karia tucked her hands in her pockets, her stomach twisted, and she refused to make eye contact with either man. It was cowardly, and she’d wear the title, sash, and crown if it meant disappearing into her apartment.

“I thought you were single?”

“She’s not!” Trick snapped and stepped forward. Karia moved in front of him, pressing her back to his chest. It was meant to stop his advance on Matthew but quickly shifted. Trick wrapped his hands around her waist, tugging her close to his chest. For a brief second, she melted into him. This was where she wanted to be. She looked up, face to face with Matthew, and reality set in. She grabbed Trick’s hands, prying them off her.

Karia whipped her head. “Trick!”

He slowly angled his head. “Did I lie?”

It wasn’t a lie.

“I-I didn’t realize she was involved with anyone.”

This was awful. Not only for her, but Matthew, who had done nothing wrong. His only crime was showing up for a date that she agreed to go on.

I am the worst human on the planet!

“I’m not involved-involved.” Involved-involved? What the hell was that? Great, now I’m making shit up to save face?

Matthew’s eyes widened, shifting between her and Trick. “Umm…”

“I wasn’t when you asked me out. Since then… I…” She pointed to Trick but refused to look at him. “We are, um—” Spit it the fuck out! “We’re involved.
